Center Restaurants
At first impression the restaurants in Santiago Centro appear to be nothing more than a collection of greasy spoons shoveling out French fries, completos (hotdogs) and beer. There are plenty of these so-called ‘restaurants’ serving up heart attacks on a plate as the daily lunch special. However on closer investigation, you’ll find that Santiago Centro is home to a few culinary gems.
Don’t miss the local fish and seafood market, Mercado Central, which is heaving with tourist friendly restaurants. Another well kept secret is La Vega, the local fruit and vegetable market. Restaurants here are basic and cater to locals rather than tourists but you can eat some of the best traditional Chilean food for as little as $4USD. For fine dining you’ll have to look a bit harder but there are some quality restaurants, especially on Merced. For a spot of people watching, you can’t beat the slightly over-priced eateries around Plaza de Armas.
