By Paula Newton

On a bright day, for superb views of the whole of Santiago, head up the Funicular. This is a unique train ride, up the Cerro San Cristobal. Try and get into the carriage that is at the back for the best views, as the Funicular sweeps you up the hillside, past the cacophony from the nearby zoo, up to the top of the hill. At the top, take a ride on the teleférico, or simply wander, admiring the view. Head up at sunset for a particularly spectacular experience. The more athletic may prefer to hike back down the hill - there are marked trails for this purpose.
