On a clear day, the view from the top of Cerro San Cristóbal is spectacular, providing the best view of the stunning contrast between Santiago and its surrounding mountains. The hill is a popular ride for bikers on nice days, though the steep incline makes for a strenuous trip. Perhaps the easiest—and most novel—way to summit the hill is to take the Funicular (vertical train ride), which is a cable-pulled trolley that picks up at Pio Nono and takes visitors to the top, where the Virgen de la Immaculada stands waiting with open arms. Head up at sunset for a particularly spectacular experience. The more athletic may prefer to hike back down the hill—there are marked trails for this purpose. The Funicular also makes a stop at the zoo, for those who want to spend the day in the area.
