By Air
The main airport in Santiago is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (Tel: 56-2-6901752), in Pudahuel, about 14 kilometers northeast of Santiago, which services major airports all over the world. Check schedules at URL: www.aeropuertosantiago.cl.
From the airport, you can get a taxi to the city center for around $30. A much cheaper option ($3) is to take one of the buses, which stop just outside the airport and can take you into the center. To get to the airport from the city, take the metro to La Moneda or Pajaritos on Line 1 and then take the bus from there. Buses depart every 15 minutes throughout the day.
By Bus
There are five bus stations in Santiago with services to both the north and south and to other countries in South America. The price of longer journeys is determined by the type of seat you request: clásico (classic), semi-cama (semi-reclining seat), cama ejecutivo (fully-reclining seat) or premium. Bus services are generally very good.
Terminal Santiago is on Avenida Bernardo O’Higgins (Alameda) 385. Tel: 56-2-3761755, URL: www.terminaldebusessantiago.cl. International departures leave here to both the north and south. The closest metro station is Pila del Ganso, Line 1.
Terminal San Borja is on San Borja 184. Tel: 56-2-7760645, URL: www.terminalsanborja.cl. Buses from here go to the north and central zone. The closest metro station is Estación Central, Line 1.
Terminal Los Héroes is on Calle Tucapel Jiménez 21. Tel: 56-2-4200099. Buses go to the north and south. The closest metro station is Los Heroes, Line 1.
Terminal Alameda is on Avenida Bernardo O’Higgins 3750. Tel: 56-2-2707500. This is a private station that TurBus and Pullman use for national and international departures. The closest metro station is Universidad de Santiago, Line 1.
Estación Pajaritos is on Calle General Bonilla 5600. Tel: 56-2-503468. This serves as a sub-station for Turbus and Pullman for national and international departures. The closest metro station is Pajaritos, Line 1.
By Train
Train services in Chile are limited. The only long-distance train services from Santiago run south to Chillán or Temuco. Bus connections are necesary to go farther south. Trains depart from Estación Central, Avenida Bernardo O’Higgins (Alameda) 3170.

By Car
Santiago is halfway along Ruta 5, a north-south highway that can take you all the way from one end of Chile to the other. Take Ruta 5 north to get to La Serena (5-6 hours), Antofagasta (15 hours) and Arica (23 hours). Take Ruta 5 south to get to Rancagua (1 hour), Chillán (4-5 hours), Valdivia (9-10 hours) and Puerto Montt (12 hours). To get to the coast, take Ruta 68 to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar (1.5 hours). To get to Punta Arenas and the far south, you need to cross into Argentina.
The major highways around Santiago charge a toll via an electronic device called TAG, which you can buy from most service stations. A daily pass costs around $9.
The speed limit on highways is 120 kmph, on secondary roads 80 kmph and in cities 60 kmph.
