Staying safe in Santiago

Santiago is generally a safe city. Some pickpocketing occurs in the city center and at popular tourist spots. Be sensible: keep valuables in your bag, don’t flash expensive cameras, jewelry or cash, take care of your belongings at street cafés or restaurants. Many restaurants provide security clips to attach your bag to your chair. Use them!Stay away from city parks and the costañera (river sidewalk) at night. There have been some reports of tourists being mugged both in the city center and at Plaza Italia at night.
