Estancia San Gregorio is a relic of the 19th-century Menéndez wool empire in Chilean Patagonia, a nearly-abandoned compound of yellow buildings lining Ruta 255 about 125km (78mi) northeast of Punta Arenas. San Gregorio reached its peak between 1910 and 1930 producing, along with wool, mutton, hides, and tallow. It is now a national historical monument, and is maintained by a handful of people, including a Menéndez descendent. The corroding skeletons of the British clipper Ambassador and the steamer Amadeo adorn its beachfront on the Strait of Magellan—a photogenic scene for the apocalypse-minded.
