The Magallanes National Reserve (Reserva Nacional Magallanes) is an often-overlooked park just fifteen minutes west of downtown Punta Arenas (following Avenida Independencia) where nature-lovers can experience some of Patagonia's signature flora and fauna. Created in 1932, the 13,500-hectare (32-acre) reserve is home to coigüe and lenga trees, as well as the gray fox, Culpeo fox, puma and condor. Two trails, Las Lengas (3.6 km / 2.23 mi) and Mirador (1km / 0.65 mi), provide hiking access and a mountain biking circuit. Camping areas are abundant along the trails. In the winter, skiers can hit the slopes at the Cerro Mirador Ski Center. Except for the Las Minas sector in the northwest, which costs $2, the park is free.
