The large inland sound of Seno Otway, just 65 km (40 miles) north from Punta Arenas, offers visitors a chance to watch the charming 8,000 or so Magellanic penguins (also called Jackass penguins) march from their burrows and dive into ocean. The viewing platforms offer vistas of the mountains across the sound, and allow visitors to get close enough to see the creatures without disturbing the habitat. You can visit on your own (a taxi from Punta Arenas will cost roughly $50) or arrange a tour, which will take approximately 4 hours in total and cost about $20. There is an additional $8 entrance fee to the colony (though it's free for kids). Open from mid-October to the end of March or early April from 8am-8pm.
