Isla Navarino is a small island in the Beagle Channel, off Tierra Del Fuego, and is home to the southernmost city in the world, Puerto Williams (in spite of Ushaia's competing claims to that title). Founded in 1953 as a naval base, Puerto Williams still holds an obvious military presence. Every year the island sees 8,000 tourists, but 6,000 of them come on the cruise ships, usually only for the day. Isla Navarino is a still a wild place.
It is divided by the Dientes de Navarino mountain range in a north and a south part. The southern half of the island is very exposed to the strong Antarctic winds and is a boggy, muddy and swampy area. The northern part is more sheltered. However, Isla Navarino is a very pristine and remote area where you can encounter snowfall even in summer, and a real paradise to trek.
