There are other places in Chile to see penguins (further south, and also near La Serena), but the Puñihuil islands, off of Chiloé’s west coast, are home to both Magellanic and Humboldt species. A plethora of tour agencies offer several daily outings to Puñihuil, with little (or no) variation in the schedule: a van ride over to the coast, followed by checking out the view from several overlook spots, and then a half-hour boat ride to the islands to see the little critters up close and personal. Tours are $16 per person, though given the competition, there’s some wiggle room to negotiate.
