Though much of Castro’s feria artesanal has the same wood trinkets that seem to be offered at every fair in Chile, the main hall also has a nice selection of wool socks, scarves, hats and jackets, some of which may serve you well if you haven’t prepared adequately for Chiloé’s weather. There’s also some seafood (smoked mussels, anyone?); this is the place in town to stock up on the island’s famed liquors, from liquor de oro to chocolate-, coffee-, and raspberry-inspired concoctions, though you’ll get better deals in Chonchi Be sure to ask for samples. Don’t waste much time in the market’s periphery, which is geared more toward locals on the prowl for a pair of jeans or a Bob Marley t-shirt. The market opens around 10 a.m. and closes around 9 p.m.
