Five minutes on a ferry from Dalcahue, and thus within easy striking distance from Castro, Quinchao is one of Chiloé’s most visited (and largest) islands, though it maintains a virgin, ‘even further off the already unbeaten path’ feel.
Visitors arrive first in the town of Curaco de Vélez, famous for its oysters, to the slightly larger Achao – home to the oldest of Chiloé’s churches. Of the two towns, Achao offers more options for lodging and dining. Buses serve the one-hour Castro to Achao route every hour during the day.
