Scheduled to be moved to more spacious (and rather unattractive) digs along the waterfront, Castro’s free local history museum has a lot crammed into a little space. Pay particular attention to the models of Chiloé’s different churches, as well as the exhibit explaining the region’s famed mingas—the events when neighbors would gather to move entire houses, sometimes across waterways, before celebrating with a party. The museum also has a separate room with exhibits the island’s indigenous roots, though in general there’s little by way of explanation in the museum.
