Chiloé’s answer to Venice, the palafitos, are coastal houses perched on wooden stilts. They are an iconic part of the island’s architecture, and there’s no better place to see them than in Castro. For a nice vantage point, head down Esmeralda, towards the coast. You’ll come across a walkway heading out of town (parallel to Pedro A. Cerda) and an overlook point. Stay for a bit and you might see the huge changes in tides that occur over the span of just a few hours. There’s also a set of palafitos on the way out of town to the north; when leaving town in that direction via bus, sit on the driver’s side to catch a glimpse.
