Chiloé has its share of tourist attractions, though much of the island’s charm can be found by taking a stroll along the coast, visiting any one of its pleasant small towns, or sitting in a cocinería and watching the tide roll in while digging into a steaming bowl of freshly caught seafood. Chiloé has its share of tourist attractions, though much of the island’s charm can be found by taking a stroll along the coast, visiting any one of its pleasant small towns, or sitting in a cocinería and watching the tide roll in while digging into a steaming bowl of freshly caught seafood. If you must limit your time in Chiloé to one locale, Castro does a decent job of showing off the island’s main charms (in addition to serving as the most central base for exploration). But if relaxation is your aim, you’ll be hard-pressed to top the serene, supremely calm vibes of Chonchi. Nature-lovers will enjoy trekking through the national park’s varied trails, while those with only a faint appreciation for animal life will find pleasure in touring the island’s penguin reserves. Ancud’s regional history museum, in addition to the island’s wonderful old wood churches, will leave visitors with at least a basic understanding of the unique, mystical aura that separates Chiloé from the rest of the Chile.

Museo Regional Aurelio Bórquez Canobra (Museo Regional de Ancud)

The Museo Regional de Ancud is small, but nevertheless fits in an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits, which weave together the islands’ history from the indigenous past through the arrival of the Europeans and the 1960 earthquake. Especially interesting are the collections of tools...

Museo Regional de Castro

Scheduled to be moved to more spacious (and rather unattractive) digs along the waterfront, Castro’s free local history museum has a lot crammed into a little space. Pay particular attention to the models of Chiloé’s different churches, as well as the exhibit explaining the region’s famed...

Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé

Founded in 1988, and housed inside a series of barns, the Castro art museum (known by its acronym, “MAM”) focuses on local and national contemporary works. If the paintings aren’t to your liking, you’ll also get a nice view of the Castro cityscape from MAM’s hilltop location....

Iglesia San Francisco

Near the plaza, its faded yellow and purple-tipped spires dominating the Castro cityscape, Iglesia San Francisco will almost certainly be the first thing to catch your eye when you come in to town. Though not nearly as old as many of the island’s churches (it was built in 1906), this is still an...

Palafitos

Chiloé’s answer to Venice, the palafitos, are coastal houses perched on wooden stilts. They are an iconic part of the island’s architecture, and there’s no better place to see them than in Castro. For a nice vantage point, head down Esmeralda, towards the coast. You’ll come across a...
