Chiloé has its share of tourist attractions, though much of the island’s charm can be found by taking a stroll along the coast, visiting any one of its pleasant small towns, or sitting in a cocinería and watching the tide roll in while digging into a steaming bowl of freshly caught seafood. If you must limit your time in Chiloé to one locale, Castro does a decent job of showing off the island’s main charms (in addition to serving as the most central base for exploration). But if relaxation is your aim, you’ll be hard-pressed to top the serene, supremely calm vibes of Chonchi. Nature-lovers will enjoy trekking through the national park’s varied trails, while those with only a faint appreciation for animal life will find pleasure in touring the island’s penguin reserves. Ancud’s regional history museum, in addition to the island’s wonderful old wood churches, will leave visitors with at least a basic understanding of the unique, mystical aura that separates Chiloé from the rest of the Chile.
