Kayaking
V!VA User‘s Description
Kayaking at the Dead Tree Valley in Chiloé, Chile is a unique experience. This place is in Chepu, 35 kilometers SW of Ancud. I contacted Mirador de Chepu and they picked me up in Ancud. After 40 minutes we arrived at the Mirador. I was instantly astonished by the spectacular view from the terrace to the Dead Tree Valley. I was informed a big tsunami in 1960 devastated thousands of trees. Today the area is wetlands, and is home to a large variety of birds. Kayaking is by far the best way to visit the Dead Trees. I was equipped with a lifejacket and a small transceiver and was informed about the birds and wildlife. I was also informed about the tides of the river and how to use them in my favor for a peaceful ride in the kayak. The experience was great. The silence surrounded me and I became close to the dead trees and to the birds living in the place. I had only to steer the kayak in the direction I decided. Some birds did not fly away, so I could take beautiful pictures. 6 hours lasted a minute. At the end of the trip I received barbecued food and a cold beer I previously ordered. I really recommend the place because it is very well organized and people of the Mirador are very welcoming and friendly. They speak English.
