Chiloé Tours

You won’t have much trouble finding tour operators in Chiloé’s cities, especially in Ancud. But you might question as to whether it’s worth your money to avail yourself of their services, since most destinations are easy to reach on your own.

Most agencies have a fairly standard package of offerings, including outings to the national park, excursions to Chiloé’s smaller islands, and a tour of many of the region’s most important churches. Prices also tend to be similar, though shop around and you’ll discover some mild differences in costs and itineraries. Of particular note are some of the special interest tours, usually offered by a particular agency, such as birdwatching or fishing expeditions. Try negotiating the price.

You’ll do better on tours in the high-season months of January and February, when operators are likelier to get more passengers, and thus are able to charge lower per person rates.

If you go on only one tour, consider visiting the penguin reserves at Puñihuil, one of the reserve’s most popular tours. It’s offered by a plethora of agencies—several times daily—from Ancud, and also much less frequently from Castro.
