From Aguas Calientes the road continues to the turn-off for Antillanca, which in Mapudungún signifies Jewel of the Sun. Rising from the Andean plain like a conical chunk of milky quartz is Volcán Casablanca (1990 meters / 6468 feet). On its slopes is Centro de Ski Antillanca, ranked as the best ski center in southern Chile. Operated by the Club Andino de Osorno, this 512-hectare facility has lifts and 17 runs for novices and experts alike. But this isn't a winter wonderland only for skiers. Snow boarders can also sail down the flanks of this volcano. Equipment rental and ski lessons are available.
All year long, hikers spread across the sector. Sendero Lago Paraíso goes from past Control El Toro on Lago Toro to Río Pulefú and Lago Paraíso, then to Cerro Colorado where it joins with the Sendero del Colorado. Other trails are Río Pulefú, Lago Rupanco, Las Cuevas, Sendero Haique and Bertín (for this, see Sector Aguas Calientes). Two legs of the Sendero de Chile also begin here, one going to Sector Anticura (Distance: 50 kilometers / 30 miles, Difficulty: medium to high) and to the village of Santa Elvira (Distance: 25 kilometers / miles, Difficulty: medium to high, with some steep (30º) slopes). For more information, see The Sendero de Chile in Parque Nacional Puyehue or visit www.senderodechile.cl.
Hotel Antillanca is open all year. The lodge has its own has its own hot springs, restaurant and cafeteria. As well, it maintains a refugio de montaña.
