The 500-hectare Cañi park, owned by the foundation Lahuén and managed by a community organization, is a sanctuary for the giant conifer Auracaria, or monkey-puzzle tree, one the oldest trees on earth. The Foundation operates the Hostel Ecole, with a very comfortable lounge area, and functions as an informal tour company. A nice trek takes you high up along two lakes to a vantage point with spectacular views over the Villarrica area and right out to the Argentine border. In the winter, you need to strap on snow shoes to make your way through the vast expanse of snow up the very steep hill.
