Puerto Montt has few activities to keep its visitors busy while waiting for the ship to sail into the deep Patagonia. For journeyers with only a few hours to spare, a walk along the costanera seafront, visiting the Museo Histórico Juan Pablo II and the cathedral is one choice. Another is to walk to the Angelmó market, check out the artisan stalls, pick up supplies for the long boat ride and dine on fresh seafood. Travelers spending a few more days in port may want to skip over to Isla Tenglo, check out the Iglesia de los Jesuitas or the archaeological Museo de Monte Verde. Cultural spaces include the Casa de Arte Diego Rivera, the city’s art museum, and the Biblioteca Regional. Near Sernatur is a mirador with a view of the city and sound. South down the Carretera Austral you’ll pass by several interesting sites near Puerto Montt. Low tide exposes a petrified forest at Playa de Pelluhuín. At Kilometer 12 is Conchales de Piedra Azul, an archaeological site dating from 6300 BC. Modern Piedra Azul village has an old wooden church.
