Angelmó

In the sheltered waters of the Canal de Tenglo fishermen had been anchoring their boats long before the founding of Puerto Montt. In this small cove, or caleta, people came from around the sound and its islands come to trade fish, produce and other products. This is the closest to a mercado that Puerto Montt has. Today as well are two-story, wooden-shingled buildings housing restaurants that serve cancato and curanto (stews of meat or seafood barbecued on hot stones). Food isn’t the only thing that is hawked here. For several blocks before arriving to the market’s entrance are artisan stalls lining Avenida Angelmó.

Location:
End of Avenida Angelmó, 2.5 kilometers (3 miles) west of the Plaza de Armas.
Puerto Montt, Chile

Market Types:
Artisan, food

Getting There
From downtown or the bus terminal, walk west on Avenida Diego Portales, which becomes Avenida Angelmó, or take any city micro bus ($0.70) or colectivo taxi ($0.80) whose sign says “Angelmó.”

Travel Tips: Angelmó is named for Ángel Montt, an early benefactor of the indigenous peoples.

A walkway goes along the cove. From piers leave boats to Isla Guar and other neighboring islands and tours of the Canal de Tenglo.

Restaurants are open daily 9 a.m.-9 p.m. They are quite pricey. Being close to the docks for the Puerto Natales and other ferries makes Angelmó a convenient stop for picking up on some extra foods before sailing

into the Patagonia.
