From the mid-1950s to early 1980s the building was the Mercado de la Rampa, the principal marketplace. With Pope John Paul II鈥檚 1987 visit, it was renovated for a mass. Afterwards it became this museum.
Displaying not only articles used by the Pope, the Museo Hist贸rico Juan Pablo II鈥檚 exhibits trace geologic and human history from the last glacial age to the
colonial village Mellipuli and the wave of German immigration in the 19th century. A gallery shows the port in the 1930s and finally the destruction and
rebirth of Puerto Montt after the May 22, 1960 earthquake.
