Shopping Summary

Between the main shipping port and the Terminal Transbordador is the Feria Artesanal Angelmó. Stretching for three blocks, these stalls offer handcrafted and mass-produced goods, like textiles, wood, leather, lapis lazuli jewelry, shells and kitschy souvenirs. Also on hand are regional jams, chocolates, honey and liqueurs (Avenida Diego Portales, blocks 1900-2200, two kilometers / 1.2 miles west of Puerto Montt). Another place to not only purchase artisan wares but also to observe craftspeople at work is the Pueblitos de Artesanos de Melipulli (Avenida Portales s/n, across from the bus terminal).

Puerto Montt has two large malls, both of which are located downtown: Paseo del Mar (Urmeneta 580) and Paseo Costanera (Illapel 10).

Puerto Montt is a last chance to buy gear for fishing, camping and other outdoor sports at somewhat reasonable prices: Armería Caza y Pesca Winkler (Talcahuano 115, Tel.: 25-2352), Cumbre Sport (Chillán 100, Tel.: 25-4179), Rincón Noruego (Baquedano 199, Tel.: 51-1291, E-mail: info@rinconnoruego.com, URL: www.rinconnoruego.com).

Nature and tourism guides, trekking maps and small selections of English language books are available at Sotavento Libros (Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 3:30-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 5:30-8 p.m. Avenida Portales 570, Tel.: 25-6650, E-mail: sotavento@surnet.cl) and Feria Chilena del Libro (Monday-Saturday 10 .m.-10 p.m., Sunday and holidays 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mall Costanera, local 217, Tel.: 34-1859). Not too far from the ferry port is Latin Star, which has a book exchange (charge), as well as internet and international calls (Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday and holidays 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Avenica Angelmó 1672, Tel.: 27-8318).
