Puerto Varas’ architecture is heavily influenced by 19th century German colonization. Intricate colonial buildings, built between 1915 and 1930, can be seen throughout town, but there are some that have been given special care and upkeep. A tour can be taken that wanders through town and into the outer areas to see some of these particularly well-preserved homes. At the tourist office, pick up a guide map, Paseo Patrimonial, of the ten different sites worth seeing. With the exception of Casa Kuschel, these homes are private, so it is advisable not to go knocking on doors.
