While in Temuco, try the local specialties, like horse meat, trout, salmon and cochayuyo, a type of seaweed. Yerba mate is frequently drunk by Temuquenses, usually with herbs and sugar. At many restaurants vegetarians will be able to find something to eat, though it may be nothing more than a large plate of vegetables. Self-caterers can buy supplies at the Mercado Municipal (Alduante and M. Rodríguez) and the cheaper Feria Pinto (Pinto, between Lautaro and Balcemeda). Santa Isabel (Cruz and M. Rodríguez), is a centrally located supermarket. Las Vegas has a wide selection of dried fruits, nuts, soy “meat” and other stock useful for camping and expeditions (Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Montt 1024, local 101, Tel.: 21-3089).
