In terms of personal safety, the Lakes District is generally safe. In the larger cities you should take a bit of care at night--the same goes for certain neighborhoods.
Outdoor activities need to be planned with a bit of care. Have warm and waterproof clothing. Tábano is a biting horsefly that plagues the region December-January. A serious risk is the potentially deadly Hanta Virus, which is carried in rodent excrement. Conaf has pamphlets detailing steps to take to prevent the disease. If doing a hike lasting more than one day in a national park, or if planning to do any mountain or volcano climbing, notify the ranger of your plans. Be aware that ranger stations have only basic first aid posts. They do not have search and rescue capabilities.
