With lakes, forests, mountains and parks galore, the Lake District offers great outdoors activities, like rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing and canopying. While excellent transport infrastructure makes independent travel easy and safe, it is most convenient to book day trips for the more technical activities, like whitewater sports or volcano ascents (which require a guide). Because the area is one of the most touristic in Chile, you should have no trouble finding a tour operator in the usual bases, like Pucón or Puerto Varas. Some tour operators specialize in birdwatching or in water sports, so do not hesitate to shop around for the experts in your dream holiday. A few tour operators will also organize cultural visits to Mapuche villages. As an example, a two-day horseback ride in the Cochamó valley can start at $114, a day of canyoning at $64, and an ascent of Volcan Villarica around $70.
