Cervecería Kunstmann and Museo de la Cerveza

To have a taste of home, German immigrants in Valdivia began brewing their own beer. With the 1960 earthquake, however, all the cervecerías were destroyed. Nary had a drop come out of the taps, until 1991 when the Kunstmann family pulled out the malt, barley, hops and yeast to once more make beer according to the Reinheitsgebot, or Empèror Konrad II of Hohenstaufen’s Edict of Purity (1516). This history is all explained in the Museo de la Cerveza at Cervecereía Kunstmann. Besides brewing das gute Bier, the family also has a restaurant serving German-style food, including spätzel, chucrut (sauerkraut) and mugs of the seven varieties of beer it makes. Large windows behind the bar reveal the brew vats. The restaurant is adorned with beer bottles and cans from around the world and German beer-themed postcards.
