Museums of Valdivia - Museum Valdivia - Chile

Valdivia has many museums covering the full spectrum of topics. Some are located in the city itself, and others on Isla Teja across the river. Most are closed on Monday.

Museo de la Catedral (Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Independencia 514, Tel.: 23-2040) – In the crypts of Valdivia's 14th cathedral, this collection exhibits religious art; the cathedral itself is open only for Sunday mass.

Corporación Cultural Municipal (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 3-7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Libertad and Yungay, Tel.: 21-9690, E-mail: ccmvald@terra-cl / Entry: free) – Galleries of itinerant exhibits by regional artists.

Centro Cultural El Austral (Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 4-7 p.m. Yungay 733, Tel.: 21-3658, E-mail: Entry: free) – In a restored German mansion, several rooms exhibit period furnishings and a gallery space.

Museo R.A. Philippi (Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Los Laureles s/n, Isla Teja, Tel.: 29-3723, E-mail:, URL: Entry: Adults $3, seniors 2 for 1, children $0.60; joint ticket with Museo Histórico y Antropológico Maurice van de Maele $5) – Situated in a 1914 mansion, this museum focuses on natural history.

Museo Histórico y Antropológico Maurice van de Maele (Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Los Laureles s/n, Isla Teja, Tel.: 21-2872, Fax: 22-1972, E-mail:, URL: Entry: Adults $3, seniors 2 for 1, children $0.60; joint ticket with Museo R.A. Philippi $5) – The history and culture of Valdivia, from the original peoples, the Mapuche, to the German immigrants.

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 3-7 p.m. Los Laureles s/n, Isla Teja, Tel.: 22-1968, E-mail:, URL: Entry: adults $1.20, students and seniors 2 for 1, children free, free on Sunday) – Temporary photography, painting and other fine arts exhibits.

Museo de la Cerveza (daily noon-midnight. Cervecereía Kunstmann, Camino a Niebla, Ruta T-350, no. 950, Tel.: 29-2969, URL: Entry: free) – The museum exhibits the history of beer in Valdivia, German beer-related postcards, and labels, cans and bottles of beers from around the world.

Steaming into port is the new Museo Naval Submarino O'Brien, a floating naval museum that will be docked at a location yet to be decided upon along the river.

Catch a concert or movie; spend an afternoon strolling through the Jardín Botánico and Parque Saval on Isla Teja; take a boat tour to the Spanish fortresses or to Punucapa village; sample the beer at Cervecería Kunstmann; explore the beaches and fortalezas of Niebla, Corral and Isla Mancera; visit Parque Oncol and other nature reserves. Further afield, go kayaking or fishing in the Seven Lakes Region.
