Villarrica’s Museums

Museo Arqueológico Municipal (Museo Mapuche) above the public library has several rooms with artifacts of the Mapuche and immigrant populations of Villarrica as well as an interesting collection of maps (Monday-Saturday 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 3:30-6 p.m. Pedro de Valdivia 1050, Tel: 08-969-3663, E-mail: historicoarqueologico@gmail.com. Museo de Leandro Penchulef, of the Pontífica Universidad Católica de Chile, has an impressive collection of Mapuche weavings, ceramics, woodcarving and silver jewelry. Founded with the cooperation of the indigenous community, their customs, culture and beliefs are explained in Spanish and Mapudungun. Also discussed is the history of intercultural relations (Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 2:30-6 p.m. Calle Matta and Avenida O’Higgins. Entry: Free).
