Ojos del Salado - Hiking Copiapó - Chile

Though it is not part of Parque Nacional Nevado Tres Cruces, Ojos del Salado forms the highest peak in Chile and highest active volcano in the world at 6,893 meters. Do not worry too much about being buried in lava because the last two eruptions occurred in 1937 and 1956.

The ascent of Ojos del Salado is a popular and relatively simple climb (though the final 50 meters are quite technical). In can be completed in approximately a week between October to May. The base of the volcano is a 12-kilometer walk from the abandoned police checkpoint on the main road. There are two refugios on the ascent. The first is located at the 5,100-meter mark, while the other is at 5,700 meters. (See Copiapó tour operators for arrange a guided trek or ride to the base. It is necessary to arrange transportation here).

The volcano sits on the Argentine border, so climbers must present written permission from the Chile’s Dirección de Frontera y Límites which oversees border activities. The procedure can be done online or in person, but must be done in advance (Bandera 52, Santiago, Tel: 2-6714110, URL: www.difrol.cl).

Ojos del Salado is also near the must-see Laguna Verde. The lakes water glows an incredible bright turquoise at an altitude of 4,500 meters. There is a campsite near the lake, as well as shallow hot stream.
