Although the Cruz del Sur Observatory is over 100 kilometers from Ovalle, it can be visited as a day or weekend tour if staying overnight in Combarbalá, the closest town. The observatory opened in 2009 for visitors to gaze at the heavens through its 14-inch and 16-inch telescopes.

Their guided tours are great for both young and old amateur astronomers, and include films projected in the planetarium as well as personal time with a telescope, through which you can request to view a particular galaxy or planet. Advance booking is necessary.
