Plaza de Armas - Activity Info. La Serena - Chile

At the historical heart of La Serena is the Plaza de Armas – a beautifully maintained square centered by an giant stone-sculptured fountain. Strolling along the plaza's sidewalks (or people-watching from one of its many benches) is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Many of the town's churches can be found opposite or near the plaza. Ones worth checking out are the neoclassical Iglesia Catedral, built in 1844 and sitting opposite the plaza, and the stone, baroque Iglesia San Francisco, on the corner of Balmaceda and de la Barra. On Calle Cordovez is the bell-towered, Renaissance-inspired Santo Domingo, an impressive and historical temple built – and then rebuilt – during the pirate raids that nearly destroyed the city during the 16th and 17th centuries.
