In much the same way that travelers either prefer Viña del Mar or Valparaiso, most visitors to these seaside towns will either prefer La Serena or Coquimbo. La Serena has the beach, the polished commercial centers and the historic churches; Coquimbo has a gritty porteño feel, an artistic underbelly and a fabulous epicenter for nightlife-the Barrio Inglés. Visitors also frequently visit these towns for their easy access to the neighboring Elquí Valley and its spectacular vistas. Both towns receive the bulk of their tourism during the summer months and turn rather quiet come wintertime.
