There’s a bit of a catch-22 involved in deciding what time of year to visit La Serena. During January and February the city comes alive, but the beaches and accommodation options are packed with Chilean tourists. During the winter months, on the other hand, you'll have no problem finding accommodation or touring the surrounding sites, but you’ll find much of the city in a state of hibernation. Many stores and restaurants close during the off-season, nightlife is nearly non-existent and the beaches are deserted. Your best bet is to visit during the region’s spring, when things are gearing up and the summer tourist rush is not yet in full swing.
