Many travelers use Arica only as a watering hole on the way to other destinations in the country, or wait there a day before re-entering Peru or Bolivia. It does feature some attractions. Surfers know this is one of the best places to catch some challenging waves. On the beaches to the north and south of the city you can practice different sports, birdwatch or just work on the tan. Within Arica are museums of interest and buildings designed by Gustave Eiffel. The Valleys of Azapa and Lluta are not only major agricultural areas, but also have many geoglyphs and other reminders of long-ago civilizations.
