Arica’s Museo del Mar's glass cases house the more than a thousand varieties of caracoles don Nicolás has spent 50 years gathering. It is said to be the largest such collection in Chile. Most of the sublime shells come from the Indo-Pacific Oceans, though some stunningly beautiful denizens of the Caribbean and Mediterranean have been berthed here. Museo del Mar also has a small gift shop selling postcards of prime specimens and shell crafts.
