Finding a cup of real coffee can be difficult in Arica. Everyone seems to have only instant and charge a premium price. Heladería-Cafetería La Fontana, though, serves espresso and other machine-made java. The strong, hot “expres” comes with a wafer cookie and sparkling water. A demitasse would be the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of one of the two dozen flavors of homemade ice cream, including the intriguing cocha (toasted wheat) and malta con huevo (malt drink with egg). Open Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
