In winter, Chile and Bolivia are on the same time; in the summer, Bolivia is one hour behind. About a half-dozen companies depart from Arica’s International terminal on Avenida Diego Portales, next to the national rodoviario, heading to La Paz and other Bolivian cities. International buses from Iquique involve a transfer in Arica (for La Paz) or in Calama (for Oruro and Uyuni).
To Visvirí:
The road to the Visvirí border goes by Painacota. The highway is transitable all year. The border is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Buses leave Tuesday and Friday 7 a.m. ($14).
To Chungará / Tambo Quemado:
This is the major route for getting to La Paz, Bolivia. Most companies leave 8 - 10:30 a.m. and midnight - 2 a.m. ($12-18, 8 hours). Buses stop at the respective border posts. Some companies continue to Oruro ($14), Cochabamba ($18) and Santa Cruz ($24). The border post is open daily 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Other crossings accessible from Arica do not have public transportation. You may cross at them, however, in private vehicle. These Pasos are: Colchane-Pisiga (paved; daily 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.), Apochete de Irpa or Cancoso (need salvoconducto from the Policía Internacional in Iquique; gravel road; daily 8 a.m.-8 p.m.).
