The only official border crossing between Chile and Peru is that between Arica and Tacna.
By Bus
The road border is called Chacalluta in Chile and Santa Rosa in Peru. It is about 1 kilometers (0.6 miles) between the two posts. Border hours: Sunday-Thursday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Chilean time), Friday and Saturday 24 hours. Transport pauses at each border post for passengers to go through immigration and customs procedures. Change money in Peru, as there are more casas de cambio and the rate is better.
All road transport to the Peru border departs from the International terminal on Avenida Diego Portales, next to the national rodoviario. Busetas (minibuses) leave from the left side of the terminal (daily 7 a.m. - 9 p.m., $3, 1.5 hours). Colectivos (shared taxis) leave from the right side of the terminal (daily 7 a.m. - 9 p.m., $6, 1 hour).
By Train
From Arica, an autovagón (rail bus) leaves at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. for Tacna, Perú. Tickets can be bought the same day, if any remain. However, it is preferable to but in advance. Sales are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - noon, 4 - 6 p.m. The fare Monday-Friday is $2.40, on Saturday and holidays, the price is $3.20 (1 hour 15 minutes). Immigration and customs procedures are performed at the train station in both countries. Arica’s train station is located along the sea front (Máximo Lira 791, Tel.: 23-1115). In Tacna the station is at Avenida Gregorio Albarracín 412 (Tel.: 24-7126).
