As can be expected in an ocean side city, seafood is a big item on Iquiqueño menus. Empanadas made of crab, shrimp and other fruits of the sea are a delicious and cheap quick meal. The international immigrant communities provide diners with opportunities to try dishes from their home countries. While in Iquique, try a chumbeque sweet. Iquique’s central market, Mercado Centenario, sells produce and other products, and has inexpensive restaurants (Sargento Aldana, Between Amunategui and Barros Arana). Two supermarkets are also in the downtown area: Rossi (Tarapacá 579) and Palmira (M. Rodríguez 964 and Vivar 786).
