Ciénagasa de Parinacota - Hiking - Chile

Bofedal de Parinacota, also called Ciénagasa de Parinacota, is a major wetland on the northern Chilean altiplano. The principal flora are paja brava (festus, Festuca spp) and evergreen mosses like llareta (Azorella compacta). Alpaca (Lama pacos), llama (Lama glama) and other animals water at the lagoons, and a variety of ducks, flamingos and other birds rest here. A three-kilometer (1.8 mi) trail wends through the bofedales to Lagunilla Pillacota, where Tagua Gigante (Giant Coot, Fulica gigantea) and several species of ducks nest. At Bofedal de Uncaliri are a small stone and thatch chapel and a smaller series of bogs where the Río Lauca is born. Frequent miradores allow viewing of wildlife.
