Guallatire is 85 kilometers (51 mi) from Putre and 230 kilometers (138 mi, 5.5 hours) from Arica. The only way to visit Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas is on tour or in a private or rented vehicle. From Parque Nacional Lauca, Ruta A-235 turns off Ruta CH-11 just east of Las Cuevas. Another signed turn-off is near the east end of Lago Chungtará, heading to Guallatire. This is a dirt road much transited by trucks. During the rainy season (December-February) high-clearance vehicles with four-wheel drive or chains are recommended. Bring extra gasoline (for at least 500 kilometers / 300 miles), as there are no stations along the way. Check tires, brakes and other mechanics before setting out.
