When to Go to Putre

Because it is in a valley, the weather in Putre is pretty much the same all year round. Days can get up to 22ºC (72ºF). Nights are cold, dipping to 0ºC (32ºF) or below. Unlike the coast where summer is December-March, these are the months of the altiplano winter. January and February have the chilliest nights and rainiest days. At higher altitudes it snows.

The major celebration in Putre is the movable feast of Cristo Rey in October. The pre-Lenten Carnaval Andino con la Fuerza del Sol in February is another important feast, in which indigenous and Christian traditions mesh. August 15 is the feast day of the Virgen de Asunta. The first Sunday of October, denizens fete Cristo Rey again. October is also the month for the Feria Regional Andina. The first week of November Putreños dance Pachallampe, a ritual for the potato planting.
