The Museo Gustavo le Paige is a must-see in San Pedro de Atacama. Belgian Jesuit priest Gustavo Le Paige, who arrived in town in 1955, started to collect artifacts of great archaeological value after visits to pre-historic cemeteries and places inhabited by indigenous people. By 1957, he had helped open the first museum in his parochial house with exhibits of numerous pre-Hispanic ceramics, textiles, metals and mummies. The museum now houses more than 380,000 regional artifacts. The Treasure Room is particularly impressive with crafts made from gold.
