Museo Del Oro

The Museo del Oro, located in downtown Bogotá, has three floors. The first floor houses temporary exhibitions. The second floor displays the main collection: a voyage through the history and customs of the pre-Hispanic tribes that lived in present-day Colombia, organized by the types of metallurgical processes they used. The third floor contains a history of gold and its significance to pre-Hispanic cultures, along with an exhibit of pieces made by cultures originally from the Colombian southwest. Visitors will learn of the legends, myths and stories that are associated with these pieces. Other pieces were made during the Spanish conquest and tell the story of the native resistance and of their defeat at the hands of the Spanish invaders. (For more information, see box: The Myth of El Dorado and Bogotá’s Museo del Oro).
