Safety in Bogotá

+ Add a Photo

By Richard McColl

For a city of its size Bogotá is by and large remarkably safe. Gone are the days when tourists feared walking at daytime through the Candelaria and would hurry back to their accommodation at dusk. Begging is prevalent, especially in the Candelaria, and tourists should be advised not to stray West of Cra 10 in this area. As in most big cities, it is worth recognizing that problems exist in Bogotá, and caution should be exercised in all situation. Be especially diligent with your personal belongings on buses and the Transmilenio. If you are the victim of any crime, you can report the incident to the Policía de Turismo (Hotel Tequendama, Cra 13 No. 26-62, 571-337-4413, 571-243-1175).
