Culture and Arts
If the altitude of Bogotá is not enough and you want to get a truly impressive view of the city, it is imperative that you head up to the top of the Cerro de Monserrate, 3,152 meters above sea level. The view on a clear day is breathtaking. Opened in 1929, the Cerro is a site for pilgrims, some of whom decide to make the journey to the top of the mountain on their knees. It is not recommend that you do this, especially when the pathway is deserted, as there their have been robberies. If you must walk the route, do so on the weekend or on a religious holiday, when the number of visitors increases. There are two other forms of reaching the top, either in the cable car or on the Funicular. Very often, if one of the aforementioned is running and in service, the other is not. The Cerro is open every day and also in the evening for the nighttime view of the city.
Getting There
If you are staying in the Candelaria then you can walk to the base, but caution is advised. In order to stay safe take a taxi.
Travel Tips: Really think before climbing the hour long trek to the top, robberies of tourists on weekdays have become all too prevalent.
