Deep into the student heartland of the Candelaria there is a small plaza with bars, restaurants and ecclectic shops that appeal to an off-beat crowd. Here in the Plazoleta del Chorro de Quevedo is where Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada - the founder of Bogotá - stopped and drank from a stream in his push south, not that you would know there is any stream here now. On week nights the place buzzes with music, storytellers and people of all shapes and sizes.

Travel Tips: The best days to come here are during the week when the place is full of students. On weekends the barrio empties out and feels less safe.
